Reharmonization: Complete Guide (Foundations, Intermediate, Advanced)
Reharmonization: Complete Guide (Foundations, Intermediate, Advanced)
Reharmonization: The Complete Guide is the perfect course for those wishing to dive into the world of reharmonization. Whether you want to reharmonize cover songs, rearrange your own original material, or create innovative chord structures for your songwriting, this course provides you with the tools and knowledge to do it all from the ground up. For those who've seen my arrangements of Say My Name, Babyshark, or even Wheels on the Bus, you'll find them fully transcribed here. I break down my thought process for arranging and reharmonizing these songs in a way that's accessible to musicians of all levels.
In the Foundations part of the course, we explore the fundamental harmony and theory behind reharmonization, functional harmony, various chord types and substitutions, and integral concepts such as voice leading and pedal point harmony. Each video lesson topic includes a fully transcribed example reharmonizing a melody from a popular song, helping you understand how to apply these concepts in real-life musical scenarios.
The Intermediate video course builds on these foundations, delving into more advanced reharmonization topics such as secondary dominants, tritone substitution, passing diminished chords, and my "favorite" connector chords. We examine how to apply these concepts to both functional and non-functional harmony. We'll also explore harmony built from the diminished scale and melodic minor scales, applying these concepts to pop melodies. There's even a section dedicated to solo guitar arrangements, where you'll learn not only to pre-write and arrange your reharmonizations but also to improvise with these ideas and concepts.
In the Advanced section, things really ramp up. We further develop our substitution concepts and dive into ideas used by bands like Dirty Loops, such as chromatic mediants and constant structures. We'll break down important topics like quartal harmony, modal harmony, and modal interchange, applying them to pop songs. There's a ton of gospel influence throughout, and I've broken down all the ideas I learned from playing with various gospel musicians over the years. While there's a lot of jazz-influenced harmony and concepts in this course, I want to show you that "beautiful harmony" isn't limited to jazz-based genres. And if you're looking for something less conventional? Don't worry—we can get very experimental here too!
In the Song Breakdowns, I'm walking you through the thought process of writing, rearranging and reharmonizing the following tracks on guitar:
- Babyshark
- Say 'The' Name
- 'Pocket Monsterinos'
- Wheels on the Bus
- Jingle Bells
You'll receive the tablature in both Guitar Pro and PDF formats for all song examples, along with backing tracks. This allows you to play along with these crazy arrangements!
